1. Never Smoke in bed
2. Never store propane indoors.
Propane tanks can leak; if this goes undetected it may leak into a room or down to the basement where an appliance or boiler can cause an explosion.
3. Have your boiler serviced regularly.
Clogged or broken flues cause Carbon Dioxide buildup, which can kill. Also, non-serviced boilers can cause fires.
4. Change the clocks; check batteries in the smoke detectors.
In order to ensure that smoke detectors function in an emergency, it is essential that you check/replace the batteries regularly. A good way to remember to do this is to replace the batteries twice a year when you adjust your clocks for daylight savings time.
5. Never throw water on a grease fire, use baking soda or cover with a lid.
Water will not put out a grease fire. Throwing water on a grease fire may cause splatters, which can cause burns and spread the fire.
6. Never store around a boiler
Using the boiler as a storage area encourages excessive heat can cause explosions and fires.
7. Label your circuit breakers
If you need to shut off a circuit breaker to prevent a fire, labeling them will allow you to do this much faster.
8. Never overload outlets
Always use surge protectors, extension cords heat up if overloaded and cause fires.
9. Winter time - clear snow from Fire Hydrant in front of your home
This will allow the fire department to locate and access it faster in the event of a fire.
10. If your home is on fire, call the Fire Department from a neighbor's house.
If there is a fire, leave the area immediately; never stay in a burning building to call the fire department.
11. Have an escape plan and meeting place (for elderly as well as children)
12. Never leave holiday lights on overnight.
Holiday lights, especially on live Christmas trees can get hot and cause fires.
